White USB2.0 Slim DVD / CD RW Burner External Enclosure Caddy Case with SATA Connetor For Laptop Notebook burner Review

White USB2.0 Slim DVD / CD RW Burner External Enclosure Caddy Case with SATA Connetor For Laptop Notebook burner
Average Reviews:

I was surprised at how basic and simple this is. It's a thin plastic (rather mediocre plastic) case, with a small circuit board inside that has all the necessary connections; USB, power, SATA. That's it.
Pop your optical drive into the case, and you're in business. You can take the case apart to be certain of your connection. I noticed, when I did this, that the case and circuit board have places for screws, but no screws were supplied. This is completely screw-less.
However, it works just fine with only one USB connection to my computer. Your mileage may vary.
Mine came with a bezel/faceplate that had a variety of logos on it: RW, DVD, Blu-ray, etc. Unfortunately, the drive I put in mine isn't Blu-ray (that's in the laptop) so the bezel is technically wrong. I wish they'd have supplied a blank bezel with a few logo decals to place on it as needed.
The case is a little loose, and tends to want to slide apart. I taped mine so it wouldn't do that, but be aware it's not a super-sturdy design.
I'm happy with it. It does what I needed it to do. I wish the screws had been included so I could be sure it was a bit more secure, but as a stay-at-home desktop item, it's OK.
And even though this is a review of the item, I have to say the provider was extra-fast, and I appreciate that.

This DVD/CD Reader/Burner is a good product. I got this one because it needs to be plugged in. I didn't want one that would drain the power off of my Laptop battery. This product is very reasonably priced and works well, my only complaint is that it is a bit slow.

jWIN JDVD143 2 Channel Progressive Scan Compact DVD/MPEG 4 Player with USB Review

jWIN JDVD143 2 Channel Progressive Scan Compact DVD/MPEG 4 Player with USB
Average Reviews:

I bought this DVD player because it has a USB port and can play DivX movies. Keep in mind that is not a high quality DVD player. However, it does work, and I have been using it for 4 months without any malfunctions.
DVD player: works fine with U.S. and Chinese DVDs. No problem. It detect subtitles that are not accessible from the DVD's own menu, which is a definite plus.
USB: works ONLY with flash drives NOT with portable hard drives. I have a hard drive full of movies, but that doesn't work. I have to transfer movies onto a flash drive before using. Some subtitle formats work, others do not work. Also, this player will NOT accept any DivX movie that is higher than 420p. In fact, it has trouble with some standard definition DivX movies. It prefers low definition DivX movies. Only AVI format will play on this thing. I tried to play some MOV videos I took on my camera, but they wouldn't play.
My next purchase will be a high quality Blu-ray player with a USB port. This DVD player is okay, a solid 3-star product. Don't expect to get more than your money's worth!

This is exactly what I was looking for, I have a Buffalo 2TB NAS that i have my movie, music and photo collections on and i wanted to be able to access them on my Samsung 47IN HDTV. The Seagate Freeagent Theatre+ HDMedia Player Station was a breeze to set up, well setup consisted of pluging in the AC, connecting via Ethernet to my home network through a Netgear Switch, connect to my TV via HDMI, the Seagate Freeagent Theatre+ HDMedia Player Station took about 60 seconds to search and detect all shared media on my network, not only on the Buffalo 2TB NAS but also on all the computers connected to the the network with shared media. Great playback for all forms of media, music, movies and photos. The remote is very simple and the batteries are included. This great unit also has a dock for the Seagate Freeagent usb hard drives. i would recommend this to everyone who wants a simple, fast setup and user friendly to be able to access all your media collections on their HDTV.

Very cheap feeling plastic case, poorly constructed unit was dead on arrival. Any disk inserted was immediately ejected by the unit. Software package is junk, lame no-name app to write files to disk, windows can do that without any help at all ... I returned the unit and will look for another brand name model. This is one to avoid in my opinion.

Western Digital My Passport AV 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Media Drive (Black) Review

Western Digital My Passport AV 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Media Drive (Black)
Average Reviews:

This external hard drive is smaller than it looks in the pictures. It can even fit in most pockets! It works well as it's marketed: as an AV storage device connected to a device in your home entertainment system such as to a PS3 or Blu-Ray player (check the compatibility list). Naturally, it can be used as a normal external hard drive connected to your laptop or desktop computer as well.
One questions I had was whether or not this can work with a TiVo to add more storage, it unfortunately cannot since the TiVo requires an E-SATA interface and this drive uses USB 2.0.
One thing that's nice about this is that it requires no external power source, it gets power from the USB. It also runs very cool so there is no fear of it overheating or adding additional heat when inside of an entertainment cabinet.
The sleek design makes it nice for traveling as well. It also comes with a stand to hold the drive vertically if you want.
If you need more storage for your media center, and have a supported device that you want to connect this hard drive to, I can recommend this Western Digital.

Pioneer DV-410V-K Multi-Format 1080p Upscaling DVD Player Featuring HDMI Review

Pioneer DV-410V-K Multi-Format 1080p Upscaling DVD Player Featuring HDMI
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased Pioneer DV-410V dvd player to replace a low-end Sony model that I have been using for a year. The Sony DVD player does not have a HDMI port, so I have been relegated to watching my Panasonic LCD TV via component video cable. I narrowed my choice between Pioneer and LG DN898 players. They are the two top rated DVD players according to Consumer Reports. Pioneer, with the score of 86, tops LG player (which gets 82). I saw no reviews for LG DN898 on the Amazon web site; Pioneer (Amazon's second bestselling upconverting DVD player; LG was #7) got 15 mostly positive reviews. So I went for the Pioneer player.
Pioneer DV-410V has a very handsome form factor. There are more controls in the front panel of the player than most other DVD players (even though I probably would not use any of them). Disc tray is very solidly made. The display is easy to read. Pioneer comes with plenty of connection options. Composite A/V, S-video, component video, HDMI, plus coaxial digial audio out. The notable omission is the optical digital output (fortunately I do not need it), which is available in Pioneer's higher-end models. The set up was very easy. Connect the HDMI cable, went through various settings in the Home Menu, and I was ready to watch my first DVD.
The Home Menu is a model of efficiency. It is divided into five major sections: Audio Settings, Video Adjust, Play Mode, Disk Navigator, and Initial Settings. It is very easy to navigate through each section using cursor buttons. I especially like the Video Adjust Menu, which give you control over such settings as Sharpness, Brightness, Contrast, Gamma, Hue, and Chroma Level. This may be redundant with many TVs, but my Panasonic LCD display has minimal picture settings, so some of those settings are still useful.
The picture quality is much better than what I have been used to with the Sony, at least due to using HDMI instead of component video cable. The picture is more lively and rich than what I have been used to. The picture quality difference was most evident when viewing JPEG photo files. They were like viewing them on my computer display, except on very large scale. I gave up watching JPEG files with the Sony because the images were so pixelated and the resolution was so terrible.
Audio was very rich and clear, although this only happened when I disabled surround and other special audio features. Sometimes less is more. Too many special settings actually have opposite effect. The player remembers last five discs, and it resumes the play automatically. When I stop a DVD and then press play there is no delay; on my old Sony there was a considerable delay
So why only four stars. Any man-made product has at least a bit of imperfection, so this DVD player is no exception. My major gripe is that Pioneer is noisy. It is not a problem when I am watching a DVD, but when I first turn on the unit or when I pause or stop the noise level is perceptible. Next, the display in front of the unit is fixed at displaying chapter and elapsed time (for DVDs). I rather have the flexibility to change it to the remaining time, which is more useful to me. I can view the remaining time and other informations by pressing Display button on the remote (and I have to press the button two more times to get rid of the onscreen display), but that's not as convenient as just looking at the unit's display. Time format is in minutes and seconds, so 1 hour 25 minutes will show up as 85:00, instead of 01:25:00 which I am accustomed to viewing. The remote control is not a universal remote, so I cannot control my TV with it. It does not even have volume or mute buttons. This is no problem for me because I use Sony RM-VL600 8-Device Universal Learning Remote, which I would recommend very highly. Lastly, it only comes in black, if anyone cares.
My next venture into this field will be for a Blue ray player. I wanted to wait purchasing it until blue ray becomes the de facto standard. I would not mind if I wait a year or two until prices of blue ray players come down to around $100 level. Until then, Pioneer DV-410V will serve as a useful bridge. It's picture and audio qualities (the two most important factors) are very impressive. Pioneer has a long history of making quality audio-video products. As I mentioned earlier, it tops all DVD players in the Consumer Reports ratings. The negative aspects of this DVD player are very minor and in no way diminish the appeal of owning this fine product. Therefore, I would highly recommend Pioneer DV-410V to anyone who's shopping for a DVD player.

LG GP08LU10 8x DVD±RW Slim Super Multi Drive with LightScribe Review

LG GP08LU10 8x DVD±RW Slim Super Multi Drive with LightScribe
Average Reviews:

I bought this drive specifically for use with one of my Windows-based pcs. It works great with that, which I expected, and the windows software that comes with the drive is also wonderful and most welcome.
I did not, however, expect that it would work with my Macbook 1.83 gHz Core2 Duo. My internal optical drive is dying, and while it's pretty easy to use a network drive for installs and stuff, it's definitely not as convenient to go back and forth to the other desk. The documentation and all but one of the reviews were pretty clear that this was not a Mac-friendly product, so I was pleasantly surprised when the Mighty MacBook jumped right on playing the music cd in the drive.
I was even MORE surprised when it burned a DVD under the native/finder/disk burning application (no third party software involved at all).
And I was elated to learn that LightScribe had free downloads for the Mac, but I didn't really expect them to work in Snow Leopard.
But they do. AND it plays movies in the DVD player software. I don't know for certain whether my version of dvd player is the one that shipped with my macbook, or whether it's something that was bundled with my snow leopard disk, but movies open right up - impressively fast, as a matter of fact.

Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD Player Review

Philips DVP5982 1080p Upscaling DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To go along with my HDTV, I decided that I needed to upgrade my DVD player. While my Insignia DVD Recorder/VCR didn't look awful, it certainly didn't look good. And while the quality of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are definitely impressive, the on-going format war combined with the cost made those players inviable options.
Enter the market of upconverting DVD players. These players, which take your standard 480i DVDs and scale them to high-definition resolutions are as common as regular DVD players these days. Places like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, are full of them. I've actually owned two of them.
I started with the highly-touted Sony DVP-NS75H which is truly a great machine. It has a great design and a super picture quality. Sadly, it only upconverted to 720p or 1080i, not 1080p as my set is capable of. While I'd like to think that I'm not a total videophile, I noticed some of the ghosting and artifacts that interlaced video can expose when put on a big screen. Despite the claim of my HD monitor to do de-interlacing, I was finding that it didn't do an especially good job.
Enter the Philips DVP5982. Based on Philips well-received 5960 the 5982 adds support for 1080p output as well as improved USB compatibility. I returned the Sony, picked this one up, and set it up. Here are some of my observations:
The basics:
The DVP5982 is a basic upconverting player that you can get for around $70. It includes an HDMI output for upconverting along with coaxial digital audio outputs, plus the standard analog outputs (component, s-video, composite, and stereo audio). There is no upconverting over the component outputs however. It supports DivX file playback (as long as they're standard resolution and not too large) over USB from a FAT32 formatted device. The menu system on the 5982 is a bit archaic and hard to read, but it's manageable.
What I Like:
- True 1080p output. I was suspect of whether the 1080p output would make any visible difference over the 1080i of the Sony. I was wrong, the 1080p output made a huge difference in certain troublesome scenes from movies. I had noticed with the Sony that whenever there was a light or white background (such as a white wall or the sky) and there was motion in front of it, there were artifacts left all over the screen. In the same way, motion scenes would blur and leaving ghostly lines on the screen. Those problems are largely gone with the Philips.
- DivX playback. I have a 160GB hard drive attached to the USB and loaded onto their I have various movies that I've captured onto my computer from my cable dvr. Rather than burning all of these onto DVD or having to hook my computer up to the TV to watch them, I can just transfer them onto this hard drive and hook them up to my DVD player and they play. Pretty much every file I've thrown at it has played no problem (but I don't have any DivX HD files). The only exception was some movies that were encoded at incredibly high data rates. Even then, for the occasional really large or really high data rate file you can put it onto a DVD in DivX format and play it from the player.
- Image Quality - although its not as good as the Sony with some adjustment to my tv settings the image quality is still very good. There is some minor pinching
What I don't like
- Audio Output - this machine will either output over the HDMI cable OR the digital coaxial out - but not both at the same time. This really is only a minor problem, but it can make things more complicated than they need to be
- The Disc Tray - The tray feels kind of floppy and cheap
- The Menu System - Simply put, it's awful. Once you figure out the fonts and how it works, it makes sense, but the visual appearance really leaves something to be desired.
- The Image Quality - As I said above, it's not quite on par with the Sony, although the elimination of the ghosting and artifacts make it a worthwhile trade off.
The Summary:
Well, seldom am I so glad I spent $70 on something. Some minor inconveniences aside, for the price you cannot beat this player if you're looking for 1080p (or want to future-proof you DVD player). I feel very comfortable waiting out the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle with this player attached to my HDTV - DVDs look fantastic. The DivX playback, while somewhat limited by what USB devices can be attached, is a really nice added feature. But for me it was the combination of price and 1080p playback that convinced me - and I haven't been disappointed.

Buffalo Technology 6x Mediastation Blu-ray/HD DVD/DVD/CD Combo USB 2.0 Review

Buffalo Technology 6x Mediastation Blu-ray/HD DVD/DVD/CD Combo USB 2.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The software bundled with this drive (Nero 8 Essentials) is completely worthless. When you insert a Blu-Ray Disc, it brings up a window that states that for proper playback, you need to purchase a High Definition plug-in from Nero. The problem is that Nero NO LONGER IS OFFERING this plug-in. When an HD-DVD is inserted, the software simply crashes.
What does this mean? To get full functionality out of this drive (i.e. to play HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray Discs), you will need to purchase either Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre or Corel WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-Ray. This means that you'll need to spend a minimum of $50+ additional for playback. Once you install the additional purchased software, make sure to update to the latest service pack/software version.
After you've cleared this significant hurdle, playback works quite well (I'm using WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-Ray on Windows Vista Home Premium). It plays back every disc I've thrown at it, including the troublesome "007: For Your Eyes Only" Blu-Ray Disc, which has given numerous stand-alone Blu-Ray players fits.
The other issue with this drive is its massive size length-wise. It also has a gigantic power supply, further adding to the bulk.
Bottom Line: Good Overall Drive, Horrible Bundled Software

150mbps USB Wireless Adapter LAN Wifi 802.11b/g/n Review

150mbps USB Wireless Adapter LAN Wifi 802.11b/g/n

This generic adapter works better than my Mvix Nubbin, although the Nubbin is a fraction of this adapter's size. It recognizes more connections than my Mvix and I get a much stronger signal strength. If you don't mind the large size, this would be an excellent product to give wireless to your old desktop.
Users of other versions of this adapter (B/G) say it is plug and play with Vista and Windows 7. This was not the case for XP. I had to install the RALink drivers. Installation is a bit tricky and it didn't work the first time around. Then, I connected my desktop using an ethernet connection and the installation worked just fine. Give this a shot if you're having trouble as well.
I am very pleased with the product, especially at this price point.

Mobile Broadband N Router Review

Mobile Broadband N Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently was in the market for wireless router to use in extending my Clear WiMax 4G connection to devices that did not support the USB modem I purchased. The USB modem works great for my Windows laptop, but did not work for my older Mac, Wii or Netflix enabled Blu Ray player.
I thought about getting the router directly from Clear, but the device they offer had features I didn't need or want to pay for most notably the ability to run on batteries.
I eventually settled on the CradlePoint MBR 900 because:
It supports the Clear WiMax USB 4G modem
It supports wired connections, which is what I needed for my BluRay player for Netflix
It supports 802.X wireless connections which is what I needed for the Wii and older Mac
It has the needed security features (authentication and encryption
I received the device about a week after ordering it. It was easy to set up with one major issue, configuring the device for Clear WiMax 4G, which required a call to their support staff to resolve.
See the post here on how to resolve this:

Vantec NexStar DX NST-530S2 5.25-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 Optical Drive External Enclosure (Black) Review

Vantec NexStar DX NST-530S2 5.25-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 Optical Drive External Enclosure (Black)

This enclosure built like a tank! I bought this to house my LG blu-ray drive. This enclosure fits my blu-ray drive like a glove. It is very quiet, even quieter than my laptop. The aluminum housing dissipates all heat, the enclosure is still cool to the touch even after 2,3 hours running. The blue light shows it is powered on and very bright in a dark room, but it helps remind you that you need to turn it off if not used.
Data transfer is very fast, nothing to complaint there. The thing I am happy most about this enclosure is it uses a regular power cable. The converter is embedded in the enclosure. This saves some much space on your multi-outlet.
I am so glad I found this on Amazon.

I own a computer that utilizes Windows Vista (64 bit) and was not having success installing wireless adapters from two reputable companies. At this point I was ready to cut open walls and run the ethernet cable to my computer. I mentioned the problem to my computer geek cousin and he told me to purchase a medialink wireless adapter as it supports Windows Vista 32 and 64. So I googled the wireless adapter and found that Amazon carried it. So I went to Amazon.com and there it was in the medialink adapter's product information, compatible with Vista 32 and 64. At $29.99 ( $10.00 cheaper then the previous two adapters), I thought it was worth the risk. I recieved it two days later and proceeded to install the medialink wireless G USB adapter and again no success. At this point I'm ready to punch a hole in the wall out of frustration. I finally decided to contact Mediabridge to convey my dissatisfaction. The phone was picked up after one ring and a customer service person rerouted me to technical support. Technical support picked up after one ring and I'm thinking to myself, this is amazing, no machine telling me to push buttons. After running several test on my computer with technical support, I still was not wireless. The tech support person, who was professional and knowledgable, recommended trying their wireless-N USB adapter. He said Mediabridge will ship it out right away at no cost. I received the wireless-N adapter the following day (again, amazing). I install it and within five minutes I was wireless. The installation was a snap. I'm on the internet several hours a day and I haven't had any problems at all. I forget sometimes that I'm wireless. At the price Mediabridge is charging for their wireless adapters, this is a steal. Kudos to Mediabridge for backing their products and lowering my blood pressure. I recommend this product to anyone who wants a quality wireless adapter at a great price.

Hardware is easy to install. It is much simpler than opening the CPU to install a wireless card. Network setup is very easy (I have a mixed network of Vista, Windows XP and Windows 7, and a D-Link N router).
