I have only had this drive for a couple days, but I can say that I am pleased with it overall. I am using it with a laptop on a comapct desk, so the fact that it stands vertically (w/included stand) helps with space consevation. The Dual-Layer DVDs that it can create are wonderfull for storing lots of home videos, pictures, and in most cases 2 full movies. The included Nero software is very user friendly, so you'll be making relatively professional looking DVD home movies (complete with custom menus and options) in no time.
I only have 2 things to complain about on this package (one on the unit and one on the software), and they are just nit-picky little things.
1. UNIT - While the unit itself is fairly attractive (silver & black case w/blue LEDs), it is rather flimsy. This is not really an issue as long as you are careful moving it while it is running. Without thinking, I grabbed the body by the sides while in its vertical position. This caused the top of the case to bow in and hit the drive spindle, resulting in an awful grinding noise. While this incident had no affect on the unit or its current process this time, I could see how it may in future careless occurances. Not a big deal. Just don't be clumsy like me.
2. SOFTWARE - Again, not a big problem, just an annoyance. I am running this program on what the box calls the preferred sytem specs for best performance. While creating a 2 hour (4.07 GB) DVD movie with basic menus only takes a few minutes, the processing time before it writes takes a long time. After you hit the "Burn" button, the total process progress line says that the time remaining on the project is a little over 4 hours. The actual time it takes to write on the disc is a little more than an hour (this is a pretty fast drive). The other 3 hours seems to be taken up by conversion, encoding, processing, etc. My guess is that this would take a lot less time on a faster system. Read the "System Requirements" for the software on the box. I suggest having at least the "Reccomended" specs to have a pleasent experience. If you only have the minimum system requirements, I would be prepared to settle in for the long haul for each project.
Also, I bought this in store at Staples for a hundred and thirty-nine bucks. Much cheaper than anywhere else I saw it.

White USB2.0 Slim DVD / CD RW Burner External Enclosure Caddy Case with SATA Connetor For Laptop Notebook burner Review

White USB2.0 Slim DVD / CD RW Burner External Enclosure Caddy Case with SATA Connetor For Laptop Notebook burner

I was surprised at how basic and simple this is. It's a thin plastic (rather mediocre plastic) case, with a small circuit board inside that has all the necessary connections; USB, power, SATA. That's it.
Pop your optical drive into the case, and you're in business. You can take the case apart to be certain of your connection. I noticed, when I did this, that the case and circuit board have places for screws, but no screws were supplied. This is completely screw-less.
However, it works just fine with only one USB connection to my computer. Your mileage may vary.
Mine came with a bezel/faceplate that had a variety of logos on it: RW, DVD, Blu-ray, etc. Unfortunately, the drive I put in mine isn't Blu-ray (that's in the laptop) so the bezel is technically wrong. I wish they'd have supplied a blank bezel with a few logo decals to place on it as needed.
The case is a little loose, and tends to want to slide apart. I taped mine so it wouldn't do that, but be aware it's not a super-sturdy design.
I'm happy with it. It does what I needed it to do. I wish the screws had been included so I could be sure it was a bit more secure, but as a stay-at-home desktop item, it's OK.
And even though this is a review of the item, I have to say the provider was extra-fast, and I appreciate that.

Sony DRX-830U 18X External USB 2.0 Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive Review

Sony DRX-830U 18X External USB 2.0 Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive
Average Reviews:

I purchased this DRX-830U from best buy for $99.99. It is quite easy to install the hardware and software. I start to use this unit in 10 minutes after I open the box.
DRX-830U comes with Nero 7. It comes with a complete software package. Maybe it is "too" complete; it has a huge software package that consumes too much CPU time. I am using 2.4G Pentium CPU + 512Mbyte memory. During DVD editing process with DV signal, computer lagging badly! It is about 1.5 frames/second. But I can hear movie sound continuously. However, after DVD burning process, the result just likes a good regular DVD. I highly recommend that you use other software to edit your DVD movie. You can find them on-line for pretty good price.
When I use DRX-830U to burn DVD (Verbatim 16X DVD-R), with full DRX-830U burning speed (x18), I fail 3 out of 22 burns with over disk recommend burning speed limit. DRX-830 was not setup properly! If I burn it at 8X, so far there is no problem! It takes less then 10 minutes to complete each DVD burning (>1 hours movie).
Someone has mention about its noise during burning process. Well, it does make some noise, but its noise level similar to a CPU fan, and most of time it is very quire! I use computer more then 6 hours a day, and I burn DVD occasionally. Its noise problem seems does not bother me at all!
It is external model, so it can work for my desktop and laptop computer where I need it. Also, its front panel design looks good! But, its indicator is not very clear to me, such as there is no power indicator! Anyway, it is good enough for my application.
Due to panel design, and software issue, I give this product 4 star! I just purchase it one week ago, and I am going to keep it!
It is a good product, and I will recommend my friend to buy it!

This DVD/CD Reader/Burner is a good product. I got this one because it needs to be plugged in. I didn't want one that would drain the power off of my Laptop battery. This product is very reasonably priced and works well, my only complaint is that it is a bit slow.

LG Electronics 8x DVD-R DL/24x CD-DA USB 2 Slim External Super-Multi DVD Rewriter GP08NU20BK (Wine) Review

LG Electronics 8x DVD-R DL/24x CD-DA USB 2 Slim External Super-Multi DVD Rewriter GP08NU20BK (Wine)
Average Reviews:

I recently got an Aspire One netbook to have an ultra-light computer in my briefcase on a daily basis. I soon realized it would be nice to have a DVD drive to play and burn DVD's and CD's.
The LG Portable Super Multi-Drive is slim and light, just like my Acer Aspire netbook. Its glossy black top attracts fingerprints, just like the Aspire...they look like they were made for each other.
The LG Drive plugs into a USB port on my netbook, so no bulky power pack is needed. The USB cord has two power plugs, because some USB ports may not put out enough power, so the cord allows plugging into two USB ports to get a higher level of power, if needed. One plug was enough with the Acer.
Because the unit is designed to draw a minimum of power, the DVD tray only pops out about an inch when you press the button. You pull it out the rest of the way manually. It also has a tiny "bobby pin" hole for an emergency release, to open the tray if a DVD gets stuck in the tray.
I used it first to watch a DVD movie I had rented. Windows Media Player with Window 7 produced a terrific picture, but no sound. I downloaded the free VLC media player, and the LG then played back the DVD movie with both a great picture, and nice stereo sound.
When I then played the DVD again using Windows Media Player, WMP also was producing stereo sound. I suspect the VLC player installed an audio codec that Windows 7 was missing, and that codec is now being used by both VLC and Windows to play back DVD movies.
I also used the LG to copy some of my favorite CD's to the Acer's hard drive. The LG did the job quickly and quietly. The LG is small enough and light enough to carry along on a vacation. It converts my Acer netbook into a nice movie player, and lets me listen to music CD's when the movie is over.
I am guessing that a lot of folks using Windows 7 may run into the audio problem when trying to watch a movie DVD. They need to understand that the problem has nothing to do with the LG Drive, it simply means they need to download the free VLC media player and allow it to install the audio codecs that Windows 7 is missing...thanks Bill Gates for leaving essential audio codecs out of Windows 7.

DIGISTOR External 8x DVD Burner USB 2.0 Tray-Load Drive Review

DIGISTOR External 8x DVD Burner USB 2.0 Tray-Load Drive
Average Reviews:

PROS:
- amazing space-saver
- very portable, bring it just about anywhere
- sleek modern design
CONS:
- didn't like the speeds on burning some media (DVD-RW)
========================================================
Just bought myself a netbook right before Windows 7 came out. It was a capable little system, so I decided to bring it up to Windows 7. I had the DVD and so I decided to pair it up with an external DVD drive - first to install the new OS, and for burning and DVD playback functionality as well.
As I said in my title, everything works. I bring my netbook around for surfing, doing quick notes, and now I can view that odd DVD movie when I'm in long trips or in idle times. This DIGISTOR is just what the doctor ordered. It doesn't need a separate power cord, so there's only the USB connection -- pretty handy and space-saving when I use it with my desktop as well.
I've burned all typs of media, it hasn't given me any "coaster" burns yet (bad burns), I just wish the DVD-RW speeds were faster, but other than that, it all works.
It's slim and sleek, I can carry it wherever I go, and it's pretty quiet too. I got the standard tray-load version, I don't know how noisy the slot-loading one is -- slot loading drives are generally noisier than standard tray loaders.
If you're looking for an optical drive that's a perfect netbook partner, look no further.
PS: I hear they have an external USB Blu-Ray drive too. Yep, I found it here -> DIGISTOR USB 2.0 Powered Blu-ray Burner (Slot-Load) External - might be worth checking out as well.

LG GP08LU10 8x DVD±RW Slim Super Multi Drive with LightScribe Review

LG GP08LU10 8x DVD±RW Slim Super Multi Drive with LightScribe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this drive specifically for use with one of my Windows-based pcs. It works great with that, which I expected, and the windows software that comes with the drive is also wonderful and most welcome.
I did not, however, expect that it would work with my Macbook 1.83 gHz Core2 Duo. My internal optical drive is dying, and while it's pretty easy to use a network drive for installs and stuff, it's definitely not as convenient to go back and forth to the other desk. The documentation and all but one of the reviews were pretty clear that this was not a Mac-friendly product, so I was pleasantly surprised when the Mighty MacBook jumped right on playing the music cd in the drive.
I was even MORE surprised when it burned a DVD under the native/finder/disk burning application (no third party software involved at all).
And I was elated to learn that LightScribe had free downloads for the Mac, but I didn't really expect them to work in Snow Leopard.
But they do. AND it plays movies in the DVD player software. I don't know for certain whether my version of dvd player is the one that shipped with my macbook, or whether it's something that was bundled with my snow leopard disk, but movies open right up - impressively fast, as a matter of fact.

You might not know it from looking at this DVD drive's sleek, slim exterior, but it's loaded with capabilities. LG's external CD- and DVD-burner looks great, and works in four unique formats. Super-multi read-and-write lets you select your style for maximum performance, while the USB connection means there's no need for an AC adapter.

Sabrent SATA CD/DVD/RW USB 2.0 Slim Notebook Drive Enclosure EC-BSAT (CD/DVD burner not Included)
Average Reviews:

I bought this to house my internal Lenovo Multi III DVD/RW (Panasonic UJ890). It couldn't be recognized when connecting through USB ports of my Thinkpad, or another desktop. However, if I put my blu-ray player (Panasonic UJ240) in this enclosure, then it's recognized and working!! My other external encloser is from JacobsParts, and it works for both blu-ray/DVD-RW drive and DVD/RW drive.
So it's quite weird for me. This just might be that I have a (semi) bad enclosure circuit board. But for now I'll just swap my existing enclosure and use this to house my blu-ray burner/player (Panasonic UJ240).
Will provide update after extensive use and see if it holds up.

Load speed is decent. Plays blu-ray flawlessly and I was able to rip the movies too for movie editing. Comes with Powerdvd 9 BD; however, Powerdvd would only play blu-ray the first time I installed it, but would not recognize BD afterwards. Very strange. I tweaked everything to see what the problem was, but to no avail. It was not Plextor's fault, as I downloaded Powerdvd 10 Ultra and now it works fine. The only reason I gave this four stars was because I needed to shell out more money for something I paid for.
I did a search online and there were no threads on this issue, so it is probably an isolated one. Other than that and the funny crunching sound it makes, I would recommend it for people who want to play blu-ray on their computers at a decent price.
