(More customer reviews)When I recieved my Philips 963SA SACD player, I was not immediately aware of its potential. Although I did not buy it to use as DVD player, I had to read through a complicated instruction book to find that it needed to be set up with a television in order to switch off many of the video functions and arrive at its purest output. Once I had successfully configured it as an audio only product, I was immediately surprised at its detailed, realistic reproduction of CD's, using its upsampling option. This sound far outstrips anything I've heard in my home, and my last CD player was a California Audio Labs product. As an SACD player, it's superb. I own several SACD's that I had formerly purchased in their CD format. The difference is incredible. Detail, smooth string sound, impact - all of these qualilities are apparent from the first hearing. I haven't used it as a multichannel player, so I can't evaluate it it that configuration. But I am enthusiastic about it in stereo. And things get better as the player ages, like a fine wine. Is it as good as $1,000 + machine? I don't know, but it's certainly worth what I paid for it.

GoVideo D2740 Network DVD Player Review

(More customer reviews)First and foremost, this is a good sturdy player with a solid chassis; so it's by no means cheap like many other players out there.
2. The network and software was a piece of cake to setup and start using. Although there are no updates at the time of this writing, I like the idea the software and firmware can be updated if it needs to be.
3. I'm using a Linksys Wireless-G setup so I have yet to experience any lag or network slow-downs, even while using my full bandwidth on my computer and watching a file over the network simultaneously. There really isn't any waiting for communication sync either while browsing files.
4. The DVD player is awesome and really does read both DVD+R and DVD-R discs. I had previously purchased a Sony which said it did do just that, but didn't when I took it home and tried to use it.
5. The server software runs great on my Windows 2003 server installation (I use the server for my intranet including web development and now file serving).
6. The photo gallery and playing audio playlists worked flawlessly.
About Video Formats
- DivX plays but looks awful (audio came through fine)
- SVCD plays well, but will get choppy on fast motion scenes (I think its the stream having a hard time keeping up... the file is crystal clear on my PC and scenes with little motion).
- VCD plays the best (no choppiness), but is a little grainy... only because of the format
Now for the negative stuff which isn't really negative... just informative:
- The software does take an abnormal amount of time to launch on the intital boot. However, if you have a dedicated server/computer for this program, you shouldn't be rebooting all too often anyhow. Both when idle and being used, the software itself consistantly used about 5000k of memory (about the same as windows explorer).
- If you have lots of media, you'll spend a lot of time fixing your ID3 tags and creating playlists to make your overall experience better.
- On that note, ID3 tags are limited to title, album, artist and genre for audio files (you can only edit the title on video files which is frustrating, but wouldn't show up on the tv screen anyhow so I guess it doesn't matter). I highly recommend having a seperate ID3 tag editor onhand such as "tag & rename" just to make life simpler.
- You can't "lock out" playlists (ie - I don't exactly want my 5-year-old watching my "Sex and the City" playlist.
- It'd be nice if I could custom skin or style the network interface. It's not that it's bad, I just like to do that sort of thing.
- Only uses WEP security... would be nice if it used WPA as well. The GoVideo FAQs clearly state that the D2740 won't be supporting WPA.
- I've found that the player doesn't like to switch between the DVD player and the network. I often find myself powering off the machine after a DVD before switching to the network.
- The remote control isn't as sensitive as I'd like it to be. It needs to be pointed directly at the machine.
- The tray isn't as sensitive as I'd like it either. It doesn't instantly pop out when you push the button like other players. The tray does instantly come open when using the remote though.
- Similar to the D2730, getting the S-Video working is weird (its not auto-sensing like most DVD players; its manual), but it's clear how to do it in the instructions.
The main advantage to this player is that you get everything for your home media network in one package that isn't gonna break the bank. The Microsoft setup cost me for a dedicated computer, a custom OS and then $250 a pop for each set-top box and you can't really customize as much as you'd like to (in my experience anyway). This particular setup will only set you back about $200.00 and you don't need anything else other then an already existing wired or wireless network. I had mine setup and operable in only about ten minutes.
Despite its few minor flaws, I love this product! I suspect some firmware and software upgrades will resolve most of these very minor issues. I'll definitely be buying another one for my other television.

Gateway ADC-320 Connected DVD Player with Wireless 802.11g Card Review

(More customer reviews)Lot of DVD players have the capability of playing MP3s, but having to burn to a CD isn't the most ideal for me since I don't want to have to burn before listening and I have such a varied taste in music. Having the ability to stream music from my PC where all of my MP3s are stored to my home stereo wirelessly made this unit almost worth it solely by itself. One is able to select albums, artists, or playlists. The on screen display is pretty basic and boring (i.e. a few colors with straight lines and square boxes).
With recent firmware upgrades you can even have a picture slideshow (also streamed and one can specify the delay rate and this can occur while playing streaming MP3s).
This unit is basically the same as the ADC-220 from gateway, except it has a newer 802.11g vs. 802.11b network card) -- this helps with the problems people experienced in the past since the bandwidth of 802.11g is about 5x as much as 802.11b (11mb vs 54mb) and 802.11g router/access points are very inexpensive nowadays.
This unit is very similar to the GoVideo D2730 since they both use Digital5 as the PC client software. Current firmware is similar to the new standard for home networking UPnP, but I wasn't able to get MusicMatch's UPnP to work as of yet.
The device supports PAL and NTSC TV formats, so taking advantage of one the of best un-documented and un-supported feature I can play DVDs from the UK (and other regions) that I couldn't on other DVD machines (SETR9). Of course this also plays videos downloaded from the internet or homemovies that are archived on your PC. UK's BBC is starting to provide arhived video that should be supported since this player supports MPEG 1/2/4 and others (Microsoft Media Center, AVI). I haven't used the microphone inputs, but this is a solid DVD performer with 5.1 surround with optical out, component video, etc.
The only negatives are you can't fast forward PC based movies (you can forward to a time, but not like a standard DVD search where the screen speeds through while you watch, of course DVDs with this player search like any other on the market), the remote isn't as sleek as it should be (it's colorful and not very ergonomic -- looks like it was made for the Asian market).
The ADC-320 is about a 1/3 less than the GoVideo one (plus Gateway's comes with the 802.11g card, I believe GoVideo's is a wired version -- they have a new D2740 which has 802.11g). The Philips Streamium looks pretty nice too and that's fully UPnP supportable, but Gateway is still half the price of that one, if not more. This is a solid deal and I am just as happy with it as I was when I bought it about 6 months ago.

Designed to complement Sony's WEGA TVs and other components, the DVP-S570D DVD is an ideal hub for the modern home theater system. I have two high-definition televisions and I finally jumped into blu-ray with this DVD player. Set-up was easy with the HDMI cable. It does take a little time to process commands. Open or Close, for example, each take maybe 10 seconds. When I play a blu-ray disc, to be honest, I can hardly tell the difference compared to my older, upconverting non-blu-ray DVD player. Plus, although my television has 16/9 aspect ratio, all the blu-ray discs I've played so far appear on screen letter-boxed, with black bands horizontally on the top and bottom. I guess that's to be expected, -that movie screens are still wider than modern, wide-format televisions. That has nothing to do with this Panasonic DVD player in particular. The only thing that disappoints me with the Panasonic is, with quite a few films, when I Stop a movie and turn off the player, and come back later to watch the rest of the film, it will not Resume play where it left off. I hate gadgets that require a learning curve, but I studied the manual and evidently, for a certain category of blu-ray discs, this feature is simply unavailable or inaccessible. This was the case with the recent Bruce Willis movie _Live Free or Die Hard_, so this isn't just a problem with off-the-wall films. There's nothing like having to wait through the F.B.I. warnings again and Skip through the Previews and then 12 Chapters to get to where you left off! Very annoying. One other little complaint is when I'm not using my home theater set-up, but listening to the soundtrack through my television's speakers, the blu-ray player makes my t.v. speakers hum or buzz, which gets louder in proportion to the t.v.'s volume. I should try different ways to connect the t.v., blu-ray player, and receiver to see if I can make the hum go away, but it's a lot of trouble to climb back behind the t.v. and unplug things and try differently methods. So, all in all, I'll give the blu-ray player 4 stars, as it seems to do everything it's supposed to, but I'm giving blu-ray itself 3 stars, and that's being generous. I'm not big on watching Special Features after my wife and I watch a film, so I should probably have saved my money and stuck with my ordinary (upconverting) DVD player.

Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-Ray Player Review

(More customer reviews)Stopped playing bluray disks after 2 months. Forced to send it back via Fedex, waited a week before Samsung fixed it, then it was sent back via snail mail. Well over 3 weeks without a Bluray/DVD player.
Device worked for another 2 months and stopped working over same issue, 'cannot read this disk'. Called Samsung and they said to spray compressed air into player. Silly me. Still did not work. Now, I'm supposed to send it back again via FedEx except my warranty only covers 3 months labor with 1 year parts. This player is not even 6 months old and I'm spending some cash on repairs that should not be happening.
Screw that, never get a Samsung 'Anything' again. Their tech support is weak, their warranty bites, I'm getting a PS3 or some other brand that plays Netflix and Pandora. We shouldn't have to spend 2 bills just to receive the cold shoulder. So irritated right now.

(More customer reviews)i researched these types of sets for months for the family. surprisingly there were hardly any reviews on the 55wx800u - none on cnet or other major review sites. since my family loves toshiba products (3 generations of toshiba buying family members) we decided to take the plunge on this tv. reasonably priced with a whole host of settings to customize your tv's picture, if you like to tweak. if not, you can choose from some nice presets. overall, the color is vibrant, the set is very attractive - elegant, professional but not overly done like some other sets. prior to this tv, we had the panasonic s2 42" plasma tv (which replaced a 53" toshiba projection television)in the family room,as i wanted to try a plasma set and toshiba doesn't make plasmas. happy with the panay, we were torn to either get the panasonic 54vt 3dtv or this set. pricing was similar - but internet was not built into the panay. the plasma consumes much more power than this set. also, the 3d glasses that come with the toshiba are much more comfortable than the ones that came with the panay. so without reviews and based solely on my family's experience with toshiba, we bought this tv. we are extremely happy and i believe all the talk about blooming, clouding, flashlighting that comes with an edge lit set like this one is either overdone or toshiba has done an excellent job overcoming these issues. some quick things to note, connection to the wireless internet went smoothly and the widgets are very cool. there is a system update that takes about 5 mins - so make sure you update your system. also, when attaching the standing to the tv, it states slide and lock...it's a bit confusing and customer service wasn't very helpful -
just slide flat so that the two tabs on the stand slide into the two openings on the back of the tv - so you don't have to press down to lock in something the toshiba customer service (who apparently never put one of these things together) suggested. anyway, i wanted to put a real review up here since this is so lacking. if you have questions, ask. also, i will update in a couple months as to reliability. oh, lastly, don't buy from JR.com - their policy states that they have to open the package and add some "protective materials"- well - that set arrived broken. i refused the package and reordered through amazon.com and they sent the package "factory sealed" and it was fine.

Philips BDP3010/F7 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

(More customer reviews)There are several problems with this player that make it something I cannot recommend.
First, this player is quite slow to boot up, you have to wait more than 30 seconds before you can even open the disk tray. This is a minor annoyance.
Second, if you stop and extract a disk before it is finished, the player virtually never remembers where you left off, necessitating a wait through the fbi warnings, previews if there are any, and then a search for where you left off.This is a very big annoyance.
Third, as we have both European and American dvd and blu-ray disks, we wanted to convert it to an international setting. The salesman assured me this was easy, gave me the website to find the code, and I then discovered that it works only for dvd's and is impossible to do for blu-rays. This is beyond an annoyance and infuriated me, as I had already bought multi-zone blu-rays.
That makes this a bad purchase for us.

That is why I gave it one star instead of none at all, but there will be no way I will get another blu-ray player or anything else from Element Electronics. The support sucks!!! We bought the player at the end of June and by November the remote didn't work anymore. We tried putting new batteries in - nothing. I called the companies support number and they took my home address and said they would send a new one. It never came! During the time the remote worked for a while and then quit once more. I called on Jan. 18, 2010 and they once more promised to send out a new remote. They took my address again and just like before no remote showed up. The funny thing is that the old remote sometimes works and then quits and nothing will get it going. I again called on 3-16-10 and left a message. Nobody EVER called back. I called again on 5-30-10 and was once more promised a new remote and again nothing!!! I left another message on 6-4-2010 and again never heard back from them. I get the feeling that I'm getting strung along until my warranty is up in a few days and then I'm told that I am out of luck.
It is a major pain if you have to run to the player and have to push the buttons every time you don't understand something in the movie and want to go back a little, or if you want to pause the movie for some reason. Not really something I want to do after a hard days work...
I will probably have to go to a store and buy me a universal remote and hope it will fix the problem.
NEVER AGAIN WILL I GET ANYTHING FROM THIS COMPANY!!!
Just wanted to add this: As of today (9-1-2010) I still don't have a working remote control. The warranty is up and I am out of luck - just like I thought it would end....

(More customer reviews)Image quality in 1080P/24 cinema mode looked awesome on my 65" DLP 1080P Mitsubishi. HDMI cable is not supplied. I bought this unit for the 5.1 analog output to take advantage of the lossless audio since I have an older amp. It has a nice looking front panel with an old school dot matrix display in a new school dim blue that is not overly bright. The lossless sound's awesome dynamic range and shear frontal presence (through full range front towers) will make you think you are in a good theater compared to the highly compressed audio coming through the fiber or coaxial digital output.
Boot up time is just over one minute to first disk image. If you wanted to access your USB drive instead, another cool feature that allows multiple formats to be accessed via the on-screen menu, you still have to wait until it starts the disk. Then you have to wait for the disk to get past the warnings before it will accept a stop or any other command. The unit is a little lethargic but I expected that with an early inexpensive player. For example, setting the video output to 1080P/24 will sometimes revert back to 1080i on next boot, but not always. So I have to verify that before starting a movie.
I highly recommend it for its price point. With analog 5.1 outputs, it can't be beat.
HERE'S A UNLISTED BONUS, It plays PAL format! I only had one PAL disk to test it with though.
REVISION: August 2009 : Unit doesn't lock up anymore after firmware update. Installed perfectly from disk after downloading from Curtis Mathes. Also still the best deal for the features that it has. It still plays PAL format after firmware update.
Update: 10/27/2010: Won't play 2 new Universal Pictures releases. Disc and menus load but movie won't play on Robin Hood and It's Complicated.
No firmware update yet.

Very annoying.UPDATE AS OF 8/18/09: This player is definitely growing on me. The Audio Quality from the Burr Browns is nothing short of top-notch. Powered off Eject times dropped by nearly 5 seconds to a reasonable 13 seconds w/ FW update done easily over net. My recommendation is to use NR setting of 3 for DVDs (it is not available on BDs thankfully). I would say DVD upconversion is identical to the Oppo 99% of the time in realworld use with a reasonable sized display - 50" in my case. YMMV. Really like this player, but I stand by my comments re pricing - needs to be $450 at a maximum to compete.
Note to my rating of 4/5 stars: this is highly contingent on current pricing at $535. If pricing were to dip to $425, my rating would go to 5 stars. With the Oppo at $500, the value proposition is not there with the 2010. It needs to be priced slightly under the oppo unless you are a denon nut beyond reason. The Pioneer 320 is the next closest competitor and its price has dipped below $300. The Denon needs to occupy a space between the two.
Major hdmi handshake issue with my 8G Kuro out of the box. Make sure you turnoff the HDMI control from the player or you will have HDMI gremlins galore going in and our of menus and what not. I am still getting HDMI gremlins upon power off and power on.
Menus are largely identical to 1800 and 2500; they are sparse but easy to follow. I was hoping for a bit more color and refinement, but they work. The 2010 does allow five memory settings for PQ adjustment, but does not offer any canned settings like the Pioneer 320 and 51.
Operational speed and responsiveness have largely improved from the 2500, but i would not categorize it as quick. Powered off eject time is consistently 17 (w. fw 13s) seconds. Load times are mid-pack to slow and by no means fast.
For example:

JVC: 17 seconds
Oppo: 16 seconds
Pio 320: 42 seconds
Pio 51: 45 seconds
Denon 1800: 42 seconds
Denon 2500: 48 seconds
Denon 2010: 36 seconds
Heavy Java discs showed a bigger improvement, shaving nearly 20 seconds off the POTC1 from the 2500.
Build quality is more compact, but it is heavy and substantial. I would compare it to the Oppo without hesitation. The oppo weighs 11lbs and the 2010 weighs 10.6lbs. The Oppo is a hair taller and has a more imposing stance in a rack. I would give the nod to the Denon in regard to looks, although I prefer the 2500 to both.
In respects of my initial testing, the abt chip does not recognize film cadences and deinterlace as well as the Oppo in synthetic tests. Its performance is good, but not as quick or accurate as the Oppo or for that matter the JVC XV-BP1. It does an admirable job with video based content. Color accuracy was very good and did not push red like the denon 1800.
BD performance at 1080P 24fps was excellent and identical to the 2500/1800/Oppo. I am a believer that BD at 1080P 24fps is largely identical with normal viewing distances/display sizes (i am using a 50" kuro).
SD Upscaling on the little material is definitely better than the 2500 and 1800. I have not been able to put my finger on it, but I think it might be enhancing the contrast to give the image more pop. Colors are pretty neutral and accurate. The image is very similar to the Oppo, but not quite as good. I am reasonably impressed with its upscaling ability. More time will give me a better feel for it, but first impressions are positive.
My early gripes are that Denon did not improve speed significantly; I think the higher end CEs like pioneer, denon and others are struggling to make the gains that the koreans have. Interestingly, Samsung only made the gains when they dropped the real benefit of their players -the reon chip.
That said, Audio Quality and Picture Quality are excellent in this attractive package.

It's the size of a regular Blur-ray player but it's also capable of playing anything I have loaded on my computer over the network and everything is upscaled to look as good as it can. I play with this all the time, enjoying all the little things it can do. I have a collection of movies on my computer that keeps growing and now I can watch them in my living room!

(More customer reviews)I had very high hopes for this machine when I purchased it from a local Denon dealer with cash I had been given as a gift. I have some SACD's and DVD audio discs, a huge collection of DVD's and CD's, and was ready to begin a collection of Blu-ray discs. I am running the player connected to a Denon AVR 4310CI receiver with which I am greatly pleased. When the player works, the sound and picture are outstanding.
I have been tremendously disappointed from the onset.
The machine has been thoroughly updated in its firmware and is still picky about playing and not playing certain Blu-rays as well as even CD's. It was suggested that maybe this was because its firmware was not properly updated.
To update the player, one is supposed to be able to easily access online through its ethernet connection the Denon site that downloads these things. However, the player will not stay connected to the internet long enough to complete the downloads. I have Cat 7 cables, and the fastest "business" speed internet connection that Comcast provides. It has been tested and has been shown to be reliable and steady. To assist me in this, the local dealer from which I purchased the player actually made a couple of discs to use to load the firmware updates into the machine. Their tech came to my home and accomplished this procedure. The player indicates that it is up to date now, indicating "latest" when firmware update is checked. It still will not connect and play "Blu-ray Live" options that are available on many discs. It still will not consistently play the Ironman Blu-ray disc. At least one audio CD I own will not play in the machine. I have checked these discs by taking them to try on various other players and even back to the dealer's shop to try on their players. All but one music Blu-ray disc (defective) have played flawlessly elsewhere.
As has been noted in another review, the player is very slow starting up even if it is set in "quick start" mode.
The owner's manual is hopelessly useless in assisting in use of the player. The GUI is "pretty," but very difficult to understand- even for the tech from the local dealer!
Finally, since hooking the new receiver and this Blu-ray player into my system, I have encountered a repeated problem with my Dell plasma TV (5 years old) flashing pink or having a constant pink background on it when starting up or changing from cable to Blu-ray, or from cable to the Rhapsody music source online through the receiver's ethernet connection. No one has been able to tell me how to fix that problem! I can't say that the Blu-ray player has caused this, but it never happened before I installed the new player into my system. Denon has been no help and the local dealer has no idea how to fix this TV problem. Dell's customer service suggested that I buy a new TV to fix it!
Over all, the decision to purchase this Blu-ray player has been a very expensive mistake. I would recommend that anyone considering it try a cheaper Samsung with the ability to connect wirelessly to the internet to access Netflix, Pandora, and other online services.

(More customer reviews)I have no way to know if I got a bad model or if this is a bad design, but this Blu Ray player is way too noisy to use. When the unit is playing it has a loud fan noise and vibration that are a total distraction while trying to watch a movie. I was hoping to see some other reviews here to know if I just got a lemon or if this is a design flaw. Even a low price doesn't make this a good deal if the noise is always there.
