(More customer reviews)The Curtis International (not Curtis Matthes) DVD1102 Blu-ray player is based on other players that have the multi-region option such as the Momitsu BDP-899, Sherwood BDP-5004, Curtis Mathes CMMBX130, and Vision Quest VQM-1000-BLU. It will play both NTSC and PAL format disks. I was able to play region 2 DVDs by entering a code using the remote. The player is normally set to USA region 1 and Blu-ray region "A" from the factory. In order to change the region code, you need to do the following (according to other reviews, you need to reenter the Blu-ray code if you are not viewing an "A" region compatible Blu-ray disk when the unit is powered up).
Turn on the power and the disk loading compartment must not be sticking out (it also must be empty). Enter the following six digit code using the remote:
9735DB (D represents the regular DVD region code such as 0 for all regions, 1 for USA, 2 for Europe)
(B represents the Blu-ray region code where 1 is region "A", 2 is region "B", and 3 is region "C").
For example, if you wish to set the player to all regions for standard DVD and region "B" (Europe) for Blu-ray, you would enter "973502". There is no such thing as an all region setting for Blu-ray.

The player's remote layout is identical to the remotes for the other similar players. There are a few differences regarding the output connectors and front panel display that may vary. The player also has the same problems that were reported for the "clone" players. It does make a somewhat loud "clunk" noise as the disk is being loaded. There is also a high pitched chirping noise as a disk is played and it is still there even when the movie has stopped playing. Something internally must be constantly turning when a disk has been loaded that is generating this noise. If you view the movie sitting close to the player, it might prove to be distracting.
The units with the August 2009 firmware version allow for the region change option. On the Curtis International website, a newer firmware version is available for download. It has a revision date of May 2010. It is very likely that this version will block the region change ability if it is installed. Other owners who installed the March 2010 firmware version for the Momitsu players and the May 2010 firmware version for the Sherwood BDP-5003 player reported that the region change option no longer worked after they updated the firmware. The owners had to reinstall the 2009 version firmware in order to retain the region change option. So, if you are thinking about purchasing this player for its region change option, you should try to get one manufactured before May 2010.
