(More customer reviews)I was surprised at how basic and simple this is. It's a thin plastic (rather mediocre plastic) case, with a small circuit board inside that has all the necessary connections; USB, power, SATA. That's it.
Pop your optical drive into the case, and you're in business. You can take the case apart to be certain of your connection. I noticed, when I did this, that the case and circuit board have places for screws, but no screws were supplied. This is completely screw-less.
However, it works just fine with only one USB connection to my computer. Your mileage may vary.
Mine came with a bezel/faceplate that had a variety of logos on it: RW, DVD, Blu-ray, etc. Unfortunately, the drive I put in mine isn't Blu-ray (that's in the laptop) so the bezel is technically wrong. I wish they'd have supplied a blank bezel with a few logo decals to place on it as needed.
The case is a little loose, and tends to want to slide apart. I taped mine so it wouldn't do that, but be aware it's not a super-sturdy design.
I'm happy with it. It does what I needed it to do. I wish the screws had been included so I could be sure it was a bit more secure, but as a stay-at-home desktop item, it's OK.
And even though this is a review of the item, I have to say the provider was extra-fast, and I appreciate that.

(More customer reviews)If you read independent benchmarks, you will find that it's one of the best out there. In my own tests, I found that it does what it should, and does it well. I haven't tested the lightscribe, but I have tested reading DVDs and CDs, and this drive is fast. I've also had no problems burning DVDs and CDs at high speeds. It does not have problems due to riplock even with the included firmware. In other words, you don't need to do anything special to get high performance.
Unless you need Blu-ray and HD DVD (which is often included with Blu-ray drives as a throw in and seems useless, but lets you buy HD DVD closeouts for $3) then this drive should have everything you need.

(More customer reviews)The optical drive on my 1 yr-old desktop quite literally gave up on me -- it just wouldn't read my CDs and DVDs anymore, let alone burn and do my back ups. And so I asked my brother for help in replacing the optical drive. While we we're picking out what drives to order from Amazon, I told my brother "Wouldn't it be nice to have one of those drives that didn't have trays on my desktop?"
He told me that they were called Slot Loading drives. We were afraid that they were not designed for desktops because I frequently saw them on my friends' laptops. After a bit of research, we finally came to the DIGISTOR website -- [...] -- and found that they had some for desktops. I ordered them off Amazon and now I've had them for at least 2 months now.
It's been working wonderfully -- it reads all my CDs and DVDs, and burns my back ups as well. It's a speedy drive, I didn't have to wait as much as with my old DVD burner. My brother told me to be careful with the slot load mechanism, as there was no "emergency eject" hole on this one, but so far, no problems with it at all. I'm very satisfied with the product.

(More customer reviews)This enclosure built like a tank! I bought this to house my LG blu-ray drive. This enclosure fits my blu-ray drive like a glove. It is very quiet, even quieter than my laptop. The aluminum housing dissipates all heat, the enclosure is still cool to the touch even after 2,3 hours running. The blue light shows it is powered on and very bright in a dark room, but it helps remind you that you need to turn it off if not used.
Data transfer is very fast, nothing to complaint there. The thing I am happy most about this enclosure is it uses a regular power cable. The converter is embedded in the enclosure. This saves some much space on your multi-outlet.
I am so glad I found this on Amazon.

(More customer reviews)Although most would describe this unit as cheap for its price, I just would say it's affordable... the difference, well this unit does what it should do in a very reliable and fast way. It's not noisy at all and the installation was simple as it can be. After looking for a decent CD/DVD writer, tons of different prices, I decided to try this one because its price.
I just have to state a warning, the picture here on Amazon it's not the product you will receive, I guess that's the GH24LS50 and the one you're buying is the GH24NS50. This unit (GH24NS50) is the one that doesn't have live scribe, on my personal case... who cares! But I know that a lot of people would see the description image and buy it thinking it's compatible with live scribe when its actually not.
Further than that, I completely recommend this unit, very affordable, reliable and I simply love it!

(More customer reviews)I bought this drive to replace a very old white DVD ROM, the old one wasn't even a burner it was read only and was now in a black case. This is a very good drive, seems well built, the tray moves smoothly and feels solid. I can't comment on the lightscribe function because I haven't used it yet. It arrived well packed, the only thing included at the time I ordered this drive was driver software, including live firmware update and a copy of Nero 8 Essentials. I did not install Nero 8 but if you don't already have burning software this is a good program to receive free. I have used other versions of Nero and I have always been happy with them. No SATA cord or screws, this was not a problem for me. I deducted one star simply because there is no drive activity light on the drive. This may just be the way optical drives are made now but I miss the light. It can be just a little difficult to find the eject button when the entire drive is black and installed in a black case. I'm sure I'll get used to it and maybe I'm being a bit picky. All in all, this is a good, solid, fast drive that seems to handle every disc format except, of course, Blue Ray, and it's at a reasonable price. And don't let the "half height" disignation throw you off, it is a standard size drive that fits a standard 5 1/2 inch drive bay. I may buy another one to replace my last IDE drive which is one of the first DVD burners that came on the market, I still have some of the 1x DVD discs that I bought after purchasing that old burner, so you can imagine how fast the new Samsung seems to be to me.

Then I installed the included Cyberlink software. I was watching a Blu-Ray within 30 minutes of opening the box. I run a HDMI through my Sony STR-DH800 to my 56" Panasonic 56lcz70, looks and sounds amazing. Turned on the pass-through feature, loved it.
