DIGISTOR External Blu-ray Burner (Slot-Load) USB 2.0 Powered Drive Review

DIGISTOR External Blu-ray Burner (Slot-Load) USB 2.0 Powered Drive
Average Reviews:

I got this DIGISTOR Blu-Ray burner for my HD videos. I am a semi-professional videographer and I record some of my shoots/subjects/videos in High-Definition. At one point earlier this year, I realized that burning to DVDs just will not be enough for HD content - the 4-something gigabytes just won't cut it.
I decided to get DIGISTOR's blu-ray burner because I got one of their their DVD burners as well - External USB 2.0 Powered 8x DVD Burner by DIGISTOR - and I saw from their website -[...]/Blu-ray-burner - that they had a similarly designed Blu-Ray burner.
The reason I was so happy with the DVD burner was that it did not need a power cord for it. I am happy to say that this Blu-Ray burner is the same - no power cord. I use it for my HD video editing, connected to my PC. I also bring it around, it is very light and portable, on my shoots should there be a need to burn output onsite.
It's plug-and-play, no need for drivers - Vista and Windows 7 supports blu-ray natively. And I have yet to encounter a bad burn on this drive. Something to do with it's battery powered operation, but I also made sure it has enough power for burning, I got the dual USB accessory.
I'm very happy with the product.

Load speed is decent. Plays blu-ray flawlessly and I was able to rip the movies too for movie editing. Comes with Powerdvd 9 BD; however, Powerdvd would only play blu-ray the first time I installed it, but would not recognize BD afterwards. Very strange. I tweaked everything to see what the problem was, but to no avail. It was not Plextor's fault, as I downloaded Powerdvd 10 Ultra and now it works fine. The only reason I gave this four stars was because I needed to shell out more money for something I paid for.
I did a search online and there were no threads on this issue, so it is probably an isolated one. Other than that and the funny crunching sound it makes, I would recommend it for people who want to play blu-ray on their computers at a decent price.

It does the job. For the price I cannot complain. I new ahead of time it did not come with any kind of software or instructions. It would have been nice if it had come with software though. BD-R software is fairly pricey and hard to get in some cases. But for $140 compared to all of the competing BD-R (Slimline/notebook) all going for $200 and up, I am satisfied with this unit.

Velocity Micro VMbluDrive Blu-ray Disc External Optical Drive (Black) Review

Velocity Micro VMbluDrive Blu-ray Disc External Optical Drive (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At first impression, this drive appears to work quite well - it is very thin and light.
It works with Windows 7, plug and play for DVDs and CDs - just plug it in and pop in a disk.
I have not used it to write any DVDs or CDs yet, but have used it to load software from DVD and play Blu-Ray disks
It comes with 2 installation CDs -
- Encina CD Maker - I'd suggest skipping this install - I find it easier to use Windows to write data CDs and DVDs which is all it does.
- Cyberlink Blu-ray Disk Suite - This is required to play BluRay disks, and appears to allow building of video DVDs, including a simple movie composer.. This is absolutely worth installing. Be patient, the installation took a long time for me.
I'm using this with a new Dell Inspiron 11 11.6-Inch Obsidian Black Laptop (Windows 7 Premium) Which comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. As I mentioned, I haven't run into any incompatabilities, and haven't run into any problems yet with power consumption or trouble with any transfer rate on the disks.
Will update if I find more.

DIGISTOR 25GB 6X BD-R Media, White Inkjet Printable Surface (25 pack) Review

DIGISTOR 25GB 6X BD-R Media, White Inkjet Printable Surface (25 pack)
Average Reviews:

I purchased another brand (Verbatim) and after about 4 of them had burn failures I decided to look into why and also to find other discs. I found out that the Verbatims were LTH type (low to high) which is some kind of dye type. Unfortunately, most recorders and players can't use this type disc and you need firmware upgrades for them to work. Well I had everything up to date and they kept failing. So, the Digistor's after doing a lot of reading were reviewed well so I thought i'd try them. The color of the dye is a grey blue unlike the Verbatims that were gold. I don't care what color they are as long as they work. Right out of the spindle, the Digistor's worked flawlessly! And you can even print right on the disc if you have a disc printer.
Pros:
Works with every burner and player
Inkjet printable surface
6x speed
No burn fails
Cons:
More expensive than other brands but well worth it.
I'll be buying more of these when I get low. I hope they keep making them!

I have to say, the idea is interesting - create blank Blu-ray media in a method that can be produced with existing production lines for blank CDs and DVDs. The premise is that the lower costs to produce the disks are passed onto the consumers.
Here are the problems:
1) LTH disks are NOT compatible with all Blu-ray players, let alone all Blu-ray recorders (although most Blu-ray recorders from 2009 on can burn them).
BIG LOSS: The top-rated, top-selling Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player, released in 2009 and frequently updated by Oppo is incompatible with LTH media.
Oppo support says they are investigating, but have no commitment for a firmware update that would allow the BDP-83 to play content burned on LTH media.
2) Speed - slower than conventional Blu-ray media. On my Pioneer BDR-205 (which is an LTH compatible burner), they were slower to burn than standard "4x" media, although not by a full 2x factor (on average, about 1.4x slower).
3) Cost - in the end, is there a cost savings? Unfortunately very little. Compare this with a similar 25GB blank 20-pack BD-R (4x) media. List price is lower, but actual Amazon selling price is nearly the same.
4) Longevity - this one is subject to debate, but there are some opinions that the organic dye used by LTH media won't last as long as conventional BD-R media.
In my book, this combination of factors will shy me away from LTH media. Unless the compatibility increases, and the price difference becomes substantially different in the future, I won't be buying them again.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Verbatim 96569 25 GB 2x Blu-ray Single-Layer Recordable Disc BD-R LTH (Low to High), 1-Disc Jewel Case

Verbatim BD-R LTH media is manufactured with an organic dye that turns the disc’s reflectivity during recording from “low to high". Other BD-R discs use the “high to low" recording method. Additionally, BD-R LTH is manufactured on converted CD-R/DVD-R production lines, which utilize a spin coating process and allow excess materials to be recycled. These two cost-cutting measures let us pass along the savings to you. Upon introduction of the BD-R LTH media, key hardware manufacturers like Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic and LG have worked to assure that their burners are fully compatible. If your BD burner is a 2009 model or later it will most likely support recording and playback of BD-R LTH media. If your Blu-ray hardware was manufactured before 2009, check with the manufacturer for firmware updates.

Plextor 6X Ext USB Bd Combo Review

Plextor 6X Ext USB Bd Combo
Average Reviews:

There seem to be plenty of (expensive!) BD burners on the market but I have no need for that - I'm looking to *eliminate* disks from my life, not create more! I was simply looking for a good cost-effective external Blu-Ray player.
After a great deal of research (PS lots of *internal* units, few external), I went with this unit and have been very happy.
It attaches via USB to my Mac Mini which uses BootCamp to run both Mac OS and Windows 7. The Plextor drive is compatible with both environments. Under Windows, I use the included PowerDVD Ultra software for Blu-Ray playback; under MacOS, I use MakeMKV (free!) to backup my Blu-Ray collection to .mkv files which I then catalog and access via the Plex (free!) mediacenter software.
Very happy with my setup, I recommend this unit highly. Looks great as well!

I never take the time to review the stuff I get. This however, has been great. I literally plugged it in to my MacBook Pro ( I did have Toast Titanium already installed) and started burning Blu-Ray disks. It's relatively fast, and so far all discs have played. I have used it to burn Blu-Ray discs as well as burn and copy SD DVD's. I've used it via fire-wire and USB with little difference in speed. It is expensive, but If you need a Blu-Ray burner for a Mac- it's great. I have an HD video camera and was tired of viewing lower quality SD video. No you can't watch Blu-Ray's on it - that's not what it was intended for.

I purchased this hoping it would be a good add-on to my Mac mini... not to PLAY Blu-ray discs, but to RIP them to MKV files (using MakeMKV). Fortunately, it works great!
Not only is the setup crazy stupid easy (one Y-cable... two USB into the mini, one mini-USB into the drive), but there's no software to begin using it; the drive is recognized instantly and you can begin reading discs.
Again, this is NOT for watching movies directly from the Blu-ray disc on your Mac -- Blu-ray is still a "bag of hurt" according Jobs, so until Apple builds that into the OS, it'll be a short ride.
But if you want to rip the Blu-Ray to your Mac (and use MakeMKV or AirVideo to watch/convert), it works fabulously.

Blu-Ray USB External Player DVDRW Review

Blu-Ray USB External Player DVDRW
Average Reviews:

for $100 this is a great Blu-Ray reading and DVD-burning slim portable drive.
It will power itself right off of USB so you don't need any other connectors. I've seen much more expensive drives from lenovo or HP that are just as nice and don't do blu-ray.
My only complaint is more about blu-ray itself. First you need to purchase some sort of software (cyberlink or Intervideo WinDVD) but specifically a version that supports blu-ray, which is a little bit more expensive as nothing comes with the drive that can play blu-ray out of the box. Additionally, you will need a fairly recent generation computer to play the blu-ray disks effectively. I've used it on a machine with a GMA965 but the video is a bit choppy, however on my T500 with the Discrete Radeon HD card that will switch down to the Intel 4 series chip when not busy. Playing blu-ray disks always pounds on the radeon, anything less than a Radeon HD or very new 9 series nVidia will probably have a hard time, or might not even play a blu-ray disk at all. So make sure you have something that can play the disks.
In all honesty, I will probably replace my computer before I replace this drive as it is a really useful and versatile optical drive
