First off, my biggest issue is that I hate Windows 7. That's not anything against this particular laptop, since most laptops nowadays come with Windows 7. I just wanted to say this in a public forum. I. Hate. Windows. 7.
Alright... now that that's out of the way. :o)
This laptop is very powerful. The screen is very big ("ridiculously huge" is a more apt description). It's a very fast computer. The CPU is fast. The GPU is fast. The hard drive is fast. The speakers sound huge. It's very full-featured for the money... more so than pretty much any other laptop in this price range, which is why I bought it. For those reasons, I can't give this laptop too low of a score. It is, however, flawed in several ways.
First, the screen is cheap. If it's not tilted at *just* the right angle, the picture starts to wash out. And the "right angle" just so happens to be "tilted almost all the way back away from you". I've never noticed this problem with my wife's 17" Gateway laptop, so I thought that it was odd to find this problem on such a "high end" gaming laptop. I find it kind of annoying that every time I move around in my seat I have to readjust the screen so that it's at a decent angle. As such, I'm very disappointed in the quality of the LCD screen. It detracts from my daily use.
Second, the touchpad is annoying and not at all user-friendly. It's not indented, which means that it's hard to discern if you're touching the touchpad or just touching some other random part of the laptop chassis. There is a slight difference in the texture, so if you're paying attention, you can tell, but I find that you have to focus to know when you're on the touchpad, which means you're not focusing on whatever it is you're trying to do with the computer. On top of that, the scroll function is not separated from the rest of the touchpad in any physical way (visual or tactile). As a result, I find myself very often missing the "spot" that I have to drag on in order to activate the scroll function. With the combination of no tactile divider for the scroll bar and a vaguely defined touchpad area, I find using the touchpad (especially when scrolling) to be very inefficient and obstructive. I'm constantly stopping what I'm doing to focus on getting the touchpad to work properly when needed. To top it all off, there is an unnecessary indentation in front of the mouse buttons which often cause me to "misfire" when trying to click a mouse button.
Third, the keyboard is difficult to use due to its size and tactile setup. The keys are larger than any other laptop I've used. They've very wide (I compared them to my wife's laptop to make sure it wasn't just in my head) and they're very slick and as a result, I find that my tactile response suffers a lot. To clarify, I spend a lot of time on a computer and don't tend to look at the keyboard when I'm typing. This means I rely almost entirely on tactile response. I've found that I have to look at the keyboard a lot with this laptop and that I hit the wrong keys a lot, since the keyboard appears to be slightly "bigger" than pretty much every other keyboard on earth. :Op
Also, there is a small "nub" on the underside of the laptop in the middle at the back that rubs/scratches surfaces that I put this on. It has made several dents/tears in the laptop pad that I use. I've never had this problem with any other laptop.
Some other quips are that this thing is a fingerprint magnet in the worst possible way. After only a few days of use this thing is covered in unattractive fingerprint and palmprint marks. You would literally have to clean this thing every day just to keep it from looking bad. Also, the multimedia keys on the left are very easy to accidentally hit (but I just disabled them so I wouldn't have to deal with it). And the front edge of the laptop where I rest my hand when using the touchpad is pointed and tends to hurt the palm of my hand after a few minutes of use. Lastly, the SD card reader doesn't "eject" SD cards like every other one I've ever used. Usually, when you insert an SD card, it clicks and then you push it again and it pops back out. Well, on this one, you push it all the way in so that none of the SD card is sticking out anymore and that's it. It's way down in there and the only way to get it out is to dig at it with your fingernail.
So, pretty much everything on the inside of the laptop is great and pretty much everything on the outside is annoying. Basically, with the awful and counter-productive changes they've made to the Windows 7 interface combined with the annoyances of pretty much every aspect of the input devices on this laptop, using this thing is a chore, to say the least. I'm at the point where I'm looking into other laptops and considering returning this one. It's a powerful machine, but using it is just a pain in the ass and it really hinders the speed and enjoyability of my computing experience.
